About The Magazine

Literary Legacy

Re:AL Regarding Arts & Letters was founded in 1968 as an academic poetry journal. Over the decades, we expanded into an international literary magazine dedicated to publishing the best in contemporary fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

Re:AL has published professional writers from all across the United States, as well as from Palestine, China, Canada, Australia, and England. Past contributors include Kim Addonizio, the poets laureate of Oklahoma and Texas (Carol Hamilton, Larry Thomas), Mark Wisinewski, Ryan G. Van Cleave, and fiction writers like Katrina Denza, Edmund de Chasca, Roy Kesey, and Joe R. Lansdale.

Reinvigoration and Revival

In 2024, a dedicated team of graduate students and faculty members within Stephen F. Austin State University’s department of English and Creative Writing set about rekindling the dormant spark of the literary magazine after nearly a decade out of publication. A new digital platform was initially built by then Managing Editor J.S. Couch, a submission call went out, and plans were set for launch. After substantial redesign by Submissions Editor and Art Director Victoria Hoover, the current Nouveau Re:AL digital platform was created under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief and Faculty Sponsor Dr. Bridget Adams.

Nouveau Re:AL is not just a returning Re:AL to publication - not merely a revival - but a reimagining. We are forging something new. A Nouveau Re:AL in a digital platform for the writers of today.

The Nouveau Re:AL editorial team has brought Re:AL back to life fully online while keeping its core mission intact—showcasing exceptional creative writing from emerging and established voices.

Nouveau Re:AL is housed in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of English and Creative Writing, home of Texas’s first B.F.A. in Creative Writing. Students in the B.F.A. and M.A. program aid in the magazine’s operations by reading submissions and helping with production, thereby gaining practical experience as writers and editors.
